چکیده

An approach for introducing default reasoning into first-order Horn clause theories is described. A default theory is expressed as a set of strict implications of the form cy1 A . . . A a, > ,f?, and a set of default rules of the form cy1 A . . . A on =+ p, where the ai and ,6 are function-free literals. A partial order of sets of formulae is obtained from these sets of (strict and default) implications. Default reasoning is defined with respect to this ordering and a set of contingent ground facts. Crucially, only strict implications appear in this structure. Consequently the complexity of default reasoning is that of classical reasoning, together with an attendant overhead for manipulating the structure. This overhead is O(n2), where n is the number of original formulae. Hence for defaults in propositional Horn clause form time complexity is O(n2m) where m is the total length of the original formulae. The approach is sound, in that default reasoning in this structure is proven to conform to that of an extant system for default reasoning.

What does prosody tell us about relative clause attachments in German?

The aim of this paper is threefold: (i) to examine the prosodic means that German speakers use when they intend high and low attachment interpretations in NP1-NP2GEN R(elative)C(lause) constructions, (ii) to investigate the prosodic means employed by speakers when confronted with ambiguous NP1NP2GENR(elative)-C(lause) constructions and (iii) to test the predictions made by the Implicit Prosody ...

Easoning Istic S

Formal AI systems traditionally represent knowledge using logical formulas. We will show, however, that for certain kinds of information, a model-based representation is more compact and enables faster reasoning than the corresponding formula-based representation. The central idea behind our work is to represent a large set of models by a subset of characteristic models. More specifically, we e...

Abduction in Nonmonotonic Theories

In a very broad sense we can state that abduction is the inference process that goes from observations to explanations within a more general context or theoretical framework. There are good characterizations of abduction of surprising observations in monotonic theories. Also, in normal logic programs there are a tight relation among SLDNF and the abduction of negative literals. However, a probl...

Recovery of (Non)Monotonic Theories

We present a framework for recovery of nonmonotonic theories, i.e. of theories that are interpreted using a nonmonotonic semantics. Recovery of a nonmonotonic theory is needed if it does not have a model under the given nonmonotonic semantics, i.e. if the theory is non-monotonically inconsistent. With classical theories, inconsistency can only be removed by contracting the current theory; for n...

Inheritance Comes of Age : Applying Nonmonotonic

Nonmonotonic reasoning is virtually absent from industry and has been so since its inception ; the result is that the eld is becoming marginalized within AI. I argue that this is because researchers in the area focus exclusively on commonsense problems which are irrelevant to industry and because few eecient algorithms and/or tools have been developed. A sensible strategy is thus to focus on in...
